How To Overcome A Fitness Plateau

So what exactly is a fitness plateau and why do they happen?

If you’ve been on a fitness journey for a while, chances are you’ve experienced a plateau at one point or another. A plateau is a state of little or no change following a period of progress.  So why do they occur? Your body becomes accustomed to doing the same exercises, repetitions and workouts, therefore not making any progress.

Plateaus are a normal part of training – the way your react to them is what matters. To ensure your training routine produces the best results take a look at these tips:

  • Align your training program to your fitness goals – think about asking a trainer to look over your program or create one for you. Also, make sure you’re tracking your workouts; you’re not assessing them you’re guessing.
  • Think about how you are fuelling your body – insufficient fuel means not only are your muscles not getting enough energy to rebuild, but when you don’t eat enough your body will hold onto fat, or even regain fat in an effort to protect your heart and body organs. Take a look at your nutrition plan and make sure it aligns with your training.
  • Sleep is a necessity – not getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night puts the body in a state of stress, which can cause tummy fat gain. Sleep also enables muscles to recover so that they can grow and become stronger. Remember sleep is a necessity not a luxury!|
  • Stay hydrated – when you exercise you need more than the average person’s intake of water. A common mistake during workouts is not being fully hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after training.
